Literacy program for rural women

Project by CAE – Club des Amis d’Enfants

Problem: The illiteracy of young people and adults aged 15 to 44, especially women and young mothers.  Women remain more vulnerable because they have less access to education, health services, resources, economic opportunities, and other basic socio-economic facilities. Rural women are often marginalized and do not have access to credit and production tools, which limit their chances.

Women face several obstacles preventing the full and effective realization of their rights. Social and gender norms limit, on the one hand, their chances of access to resources and socio-economic opportunities, and on the other hand, their involvement and participation in community and municipal development programs. Also, the illiteracy of women reinforces and aggravates their inability to have access to resources, to better manage their economic initiatives, and above all to assert themselves and validly defend their rights.

Solution: Create a complete functional literacy program (basic literacy and post-literacy) for the benefit of 300 vulnerable women from 12 women's groups.

Strengthen the technical and financial capacities of 300 women through the establishment of a Savings and Credit system called GEC (Savings and Credit Group) within the 12 beneficiary groups, strengthening the capacities of members for managing Income Generating Activities (IGA). Consecutively, the groups will be accompanied and supported for the development of projects of collective interest.

Promote inclusive local development through information, awareness-raising and training activities for women, community leaders, municipal authorities on transformative gender, the socioeconomic inclusion of women, and gender-based violence.

Duration: 24 months
Budget: 49 987 000 CFA / 82000 $
